How to Prepare Your RV for Winter Storage in Eastern Idaho
Winter shows up early in eastern Idaho. Before you park your RV for the season, a short inspection and some preparation can help keep small problems from becoming expensive repairs by spring.
When a rig sits for months, water intrusion and freeze-thaw cycles can cause damage you may not discover until the first warm weekend. Get your RV ready now so that weekend is spent camping.
Start with the Roof and Exterior Sealants
Your roof and exterior seals deserve attention before winter storage. Inspect the roof using the access and safety guidance in your owner's manual, or have a professional inspect it.
- Check roof seams and the areas around vents, skylights, the air conditioner, and antenna bases.
- Inspect sealants around windows, doors, storage compartments, corners, and the joints where the front and rear caps meet the sidewalls.
- Look for cracking, peeling, gaps, or sealant that has pulled away.
- Have questionable areas repaired before parking your RV for the season.
Your RV Pre-Storage Checklist
- Tires: Check tire pressure and sidewalls, and consider tire covers to limit sun exposure. All stored items at our lot must remain on inflated tires, except slide-out campers.
- Batteries: Prepare batteries for storage according to the battery and RV manufacturers' instructions.
- Water systems: Winterize tanks, the water heater, and plumbing according to your RV owner's manual. Follow the instructions for your particular system, or have a professional handle the winterization.
- Vents and openings: Secure vents and openings according to your owner's manual. Remove food and anything that could attract rodents, and check for possible entry points.
- Awnings, slides, and doors: Retract and secure awnings and slides. Lock doors and compartments.
- Compartments and undercarriage: Remove items that should not remain in storage, and inspect underneath for loose parts, rust, or damage.
